Among the Redwoods is a free, non-commercial project. We collect as little as possible, never sell anything, use no advertising trackers, and remove your data on request.
What we hold
What we collect
Among the Redwoods is a free, non-commercial project — not a company or a charity. We are not in the business of your data: we never sell it, and we never share it for advertising. The only personal information we hold is what you choose to send us when you contribute.
- Your contribution: the place, location, description, access notes, and any photos you upload. Once reviewed, this becomes part of the public record, shown with its confidence and source context.
- Optional contact details: a name and email, and only if you fill those fields in. We use them to credit you if you ask, reply about your submission, or check back on a correction.
- Photo metadata: photos can carry embedded information such as the date and GPS location where they were taken. We may use that to place a sighting, and we can strip it on request.
Contributions
How we use what you send
We review contributions before anything is published. We use your submission to improve the public map and — only if you opt in — to credit you as a contributor on the relevant place.
We keep a provenance trail for every datum: where it came from and what it supports. That is what lets us remove your data precisely and reversibly if you ask. We never sell contributions or contact details, and we never use them to advertise to you.
Technical
Analytics & cookies
- Product analytics (PostHog): we use PostHog, a US-hosted analytics tool, to understand how the site is used — pages viewed, links followed, and contribution steps. It sets a first-party cookie to recognise repeat visits, honours your browser's "Do Not Track" setting, and never records the values you type into forms. We do not use it for advertising and never sell the data.
- Hosting: our host (Cloudflare) processes standard request information, including your IP address, to serve the site and protect it from abuse. We do not build a profile from it.
- Cookies: PostHog sets a first-party analytics cookie (described above). The only other cookie we set is a short-lived, HttpOnly session cookie for our internal review desk — never set for ordinary visitors browsing the map.
Your control
Access, correction & removal
You can ask us at any time to see what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it — a name, an email, a photo, or a whole contribution. Because every datum records where it came from, removal is quick and complete.
