About this place
Compiled from the listed sources below — not a first-hand account.
Wellingtonia Avenue is a public road (the B3348) running over Finchampstead Ridges near Crowthorne, Berkshire, planted on both sides with more than a hundred giant sequoia (the species commonly called Wellingtonia in the UK). The trees were established in the 1860s as a memorial to the Duke of Wellington, who had lived nearby; sources place the planting variously in the early-to-late 1860s. It is one of the rare genuinely free redwood sites, viewable any time from the roadside — though it is now a busy through-route, so take care, as there is no dedicated parking or footpath alongside.
