About this place
Compiled from the listed sources below — not a first-hand account.
Cragside is the National Trust's dramatic Victorian estate above the Debdon Burn near Rothbury, Northumberland, built for the engineer and inventor William Armstrong. Its Pinetum holds some of the tallest trees in the country, including giant redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) among the conifers planted by the Armstrong family from the 1860s; one estate giant redwood was crowned the World's Tallest Bedded Christmas Tree by Guinness World Records, the record achieved on 13 November 2025. As a National Trust property it charges admission (members free); the gardens and woodland can be visited on a grounds ticket.
